Student Team Update
The HBS Rugby 2018/19 season kicked off last Thursday with a match against the Mystic River B-side, a hard-fought loss with a final score of 21-33. Mystic River’s B side serves as the feeder into Mystic’s first team, the reigning D1 national champions. While it was the first rugby game for more than 5 starters on the HBS side, the team controlled the early portion of the match, playing the first 15 minutes almost entirely inside Mystic’s 30 meter line. HBS forwards broke the line well and the back line kept the ball moving through multiple phases. An ill-timed HBS penalty resulted in a lost possession and turned the momentum of the match. Mystic was able to break through the wings and score several times – ending the first half with a of score 7-21 Mystic. In the second half, HBS regrouped and pulled the game within 12 points behind multiple tries by a strong forward pack and vigorous defense. HBS try scorers for the match included club newcomers Rob Blume and Chris Chynoweth.
The match was the opener for a fall season that will culminate in the Austin Fall Brawl (Oct 27-28) and the “Game before the Game” Harvard-Yale matchup. The Harvard-Yale match will be held on the evening of Friday, November 16th under the lights at Mignone Field. The club is working hard to promote the match with a goal of drawing 300+ fans. So far this season, over 40 different students have come out for practice, and the club has rebooted the tradition of weekly post-practice dinners. Pete Sickle, in his first year as HBS coach, has brought training to a higher level – increasing the amount of simulated game play to ingrain good in-game decision making. The leadership has kickstarted fundraising with the goal of decreasing out-of-pocket travel costs and bringing the largest possible side to Austin and the Duke Championships.
Another focus for leadership this year is strengthening the team’s connection with the Old Boys – beginning with this newsletter. While RCs will be out of town on their section retreats, a contingent of EC players is looking forward to our annual match against the Old Boys this coming weekend.

The pitch was dedicated October 15, 2016 and is officially the Roberto Mignone Field, in honor of a major gift from Roberto who played rugby at both Harvard College and HBS. A bronze plaque of HBS major donors now stands at the entry to the pitch. We will be planning more use for international matches, youth rugby and tournaments such as a 7s. The pitch is officially compliant with IRB standards.
